Seashells are extracted from shell banks in the North Sea using a type of sand dredger. Then dried and ground into small granules (easy to spread!). Seashell lime is rich in calcium carbonate (96.1% CaCO3) and, unlike other agricultural lime types, contains much less water. The dry matter content is 99.5%.
In addition, seashell lime contains essential trace elements such as potassium, copper, iron, manganese, magnesium, zinc, cobalt, sodium, selenium, iodine, fluorine, chlorine, sulphate, etc.
The Quist Laboratory in Aarhus, Denmark, has conducted measurements regarding the solubility of various types of lime. To dissolve 99% of lime (calcium carbonate) in hydrochloric acid, agricultural lime (limestone) takes approximately 60 minutes, while seashell lime takes more than 750 minutes. Seashell lime therefore has a very long-lasting effect and is also much more difficult to leach out!
