This is the original broccoli, as it has been cultivated for centuries! It probably arrived in England during Roman times and has been very popular, especially along the south coast, ever since. The plant overwinters and yields its first harvest of tender flower stalks (soft as asparagus) with an abundance of purple florets at the top in the 2nd year (from February to April). You can harvest them when they are still deep in bud, or a little riper. The plant can last for years; pruning rejuvenates it. Provide extra protection if severe frost is expected...
