Thai Ginger or Galangal

  • Product number: 833040.1
  • Origin: Southeast Asia
  • Latin: Alpinia galanga

This plant is closely related to ginger. It is a perennial plant from the tropics, probably originating from Indonesia but currently cultivated in Indochina, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. However, the herb was certainly already used in the Netherlands in the 12th century: Hildegard of Bingen used it at that time as a medicine for 'heart pain'. The root is used as a spice; it has a mild ginger flavor and smells of citrus and pine trees. It is used fresh, dried or pickled. Galangal can be replaced by ginger in recipes and vice versa. In Indonesia, the plant is seen as a stimulant and an aphrodisiac. It is also said to induce menstruation. (Source: Wikipedia)
