This ornamental foliage plant is very popular in the tropics because of its edible tubers. The leaves of the Xanthosoma brasiliense (833000) are softer and more popular, but the leaves of this Tajer are also very edible (especially when young). The main purpose of cultivating this Tajer is primarily the large tubers that the plant forms. In Suriname, the tubers are boiled, baked or fried; the dish Pom, which is usually made from this Tajer, is very popular.
