In South India, this is the most popular tree to serve as a seasoning in Madras curry. Many Indians typically have this tree in their garden! Together with coriander, curry leaves give many dishes an Indian character. Use fresh or dried, experiment with this seasoning! With us, the plant can be kept in a pot and can be moved outdoors in summer. Some night frost is not disastrous (for an older plant). The small white flowers grow into black berries, which are edible: process them into jam, for example. From September-October, the plant must be moved indoors or overwintered elsewhere in a frost-free environment. From April, it can be moved outdoors again.

Winter care:
Young plants need some time to root well and grow stronger. The tree is a relative of citrus and its care is comparable to some extent, although the curry leaf tree needs more warmth. Young plants should be brought indoors as soon as nights get colder than 10 degrees (older plants are more tolerant to cold), place them in the sunniest spot available indoors (south-facing window). The winter temperature can fluctuate between 10 degrees at night and about 20 degrees during the day. The plant needs high humidity. This can be achieved by filling a saucer with water, placing an inverted dish in it, and then placing the plant on top. The pot should not be in contact with the water and the saucer should always be filled with water. The plants should be watered sparingly, but the soil should never dry out completely. Too much water at once cools the roots too much and inhibits growth. Fertilize again from the end of February, provided the plant is well-leafed. Then also increase watering. The plant may lose its leaves in December or January, which is normal, it is not an evergreen tree. New leaves usually appear on the plant again after about a month.
