This relative of ginger is a spicier seasoning: slices are cut from the (dried or fresh) root for a flavor mix of ginger, pepper, and cloves. Malaysian and Indonesian cuisine is distinguished by the use of this spice. The fragrant and aromatic leaf is also edible, and the fruits serve as a substitute for Cardamom. Medicinally, the root aids digestion. In Europe, galangal root is used in liqueurs and bitters. It arrived in Europe via the Silk Road. The long, lance-shaped leaves (1-1.5 m high) are adorned in summer with fantastic flower clusters: white on the outside, yellow with red veins on the inside, an orchid is nothing compared to it... The plants are best brought indoors in autumn and placed outside from May.
