Gynura

It is a climbing plant from the cucumber family (Cucurbitaceae) that grows wild in Southeast China, Japan, and Thailand. It has traditionally been an important plant in traditional Chinese medicine. The plant is of interest to researchers because of its medicinal properties, which are related to the properties of ginseng.
The plant has many positive nicknames. In the Chinese province of Guizhou, the plant is called the "herb of immortality" because the high number of centenarians in the region is attributed to the daily use of tea preparations with this medicinal herb. It is also sometimes called five-leaf ginseng, although it is not closely related to true ginseng. In Japan, the tea type is called "Amachazuru Sweet Tea" because of its somewhat sweet taste.
Tea can be made in the usual way from fresh or dried leaves. Freshly picked leaves of the plant are edible and taste like licorice.
Jiaogulan can be kept indoors or outdoors as a climbing or hanging plant. If it overwinters outdoors, it loses its leaves in the cold season. The plant is content with a place in partial shade and with normal potting soil, which is occasionally fertilized. The fast-growing plant can be easily propagated by cuttings.
