This species is the main source of our menthol candies! At least the Japanese variety of this tasty wild mint. Its rather mild flavor suits many dishes and makes a gentle mint tea. Give the plants a moist spot; they don't mind wet feet.
All mint varieties grow in sun or shade. In the sun, the most compact growth and the most intense color, scent, and flavor develop. Each species goes through 2 growth stages: in spring, there's an upward growth spurt before flowering. Afterward, horizontally (hard) growing runners emerge, which develop into new plants elsewhere. Bees and butterflies love mint flowers.
