'Weisse Ananas', also known as the white pineapple strawberry, is a particularly old strawberry variety that dates back to the first crosses between the North American Fragaria virginiana and the South American Fragaria chiloensis. This makes it one of the oldest forms of the garden strawberry, offering a glimpse into what the first cultivated strawberries looked like before modern large-fruited varieties were developed.
The medium-sized fruits ripen in June and, when ripe, remain creamy white to soft cream or pinkish, while the achenes turn bright red. This unique color contrast makes the fruits instantly recognizable. The taste is sweet and aromatic, with a distinct flavor reminiscent of pineapple, to which the variety owes its name.
The plants grow vigorously, readily produce runners, and are winter-hardy. They thrive best in a sunny location in nutritious, well-drained soil. Although 'Weisse Ananas' is self-pollinating, a second strawberry variety nearby can improve pollination and yield.
