PLENTIFUL AVAILABILITY AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR. A tasty selection from the wild American strawberry. The origin or breeder can no longer be traced. Around 1950, this strawberry was still professionally cultivated in a few nurseries near Breda. Due to the extensive picking required for its small fruits, it gradually fell out of favor and would probably have disappeared entirely by then, had it not been specifically requested by a single canning factory in the 1940s and 1950s. Meanwhile, the hobby world and the (experimental) culinary world, in particular, have become re-interested in the original, robust taste of wild strawberries. The fruits are very small, ripen rather early, are broad-round in shape, blood-red in color, and stone-red to blood-red internally. They are easy to pick without a calyx and are fairly firm, juicy, strongly fragrant with a good taste. The seeds are yellow, slightly red, and deeply embedded in the flesh. The plants develop many runners and young plants; the runners themselves are red in color when exposed to the sun. (bnkk)
Part of our strawberry collection consists of rare old varieties, which are only sporadically available. This means that the waiting time can be long. Each year, a new crop is potted by our grower in July, which is delivered in August-September. In April-May, we can supplement a portion of this assortment. Please note that postage costs may apply for any subsequent deliveries?
