(Late) Raspberry strawberry 'Frau Mieze Schindler' / 'Nelie Miez'

  • Product number: 830300.1
  • Origin: Europe
  • Latin: Fragaria x ananassa

(1919) Ripening a little earlier than Tago, but later than many other strawberries, this beautiful old variety yields its medium-sized, deep red fruits. The fruits are quite small and firm, and due to their deeply embedded seeds, they have a bumpy texture. Oddly enough, in addition to looking like a raspberry, they also have an unmistakably subtle raspberry flavor! The mild taste is unique and invites you to indulge... enjoy it all the more because the harvest is not so large! Because this variety has very few to no stamens, another variety must always be nearby to ensure good pollination.

Our strawberry collection partly consists of rare old varieties, which are only sporadically available. Therefore, the waiting time may be long. Annually in July, a new batch is potted by our grower, which is delivered in August-September. In April-May, we can replenish a part of this assortment. Please note that postage costs will apply for any subsequent deliveries.

created in 1925 in Dresden-Pillnitz under Prof. Schindler (Lucida perfecta x Johannes Müller Lucida perfecta Johannes Müller). When fully ripe, it bears deep dark red, glossy fruits with a very intense aroma, somewhat reminiscent of blackberries. It ripens very late, thereby extending the harvest season. However, it also needs another strawberry variety that blooms at the same time, because it only bears female flowers. The easiest way to ensure pollination is to plant some ever-bearing varieties such as alpine strawberries, climbing strawberries, Ostara, or similar, or simply different varieties. There will usually be something blooming with Mieze then. Due to the tenderness and softness of its cell tissue, this variety naturally also has its weaknesses, such as the perishable fruits and the high susceptibility to fungal diseases. Attempts have been made to remedy this for some time through new breeding. However, this is an almost unsolvable task if one values equally good taste. The most aromatic strawberries are simply all a bit softer. Since the production of healthy runners without pesticides is very difficult, at least for us, and Mieze Schindler can already be bought in hardware stores and garden centres, we only grow it to cover our own needs. No more runners are sold here.
