This very hardy shrub creeps along the ground and only grows to 10-25 cm tall! They naturally grow in the dunes (hence the name), but also thrive in nutrient-rich soil. In late spring, white blossoms appear, followed by wine-red to almost black ripening berries. The fruits are (when fully ripe) sweet with a pleasant tartness, sometimes slightly bitter. Do not eat bitter fruits! Of course, they are very suitable for making a healthy jam or juice.
