Elder, Golden Yellow 'Golden Tower'

  • Product number: 823006.1
  • Origin: Europe
  • Latin: Sambucus nigra

A beautiful variation on a simple theme! This elderberry develops golden-yellow, finely incised leaves and grows narrowly upright: 70 cm wide and 2-3 m high, making it ideal for small gardens! After the pure white bloom in large umbels, the coveted elderberries appear.
Flowering occurs from May to July, pollination is by insects, and the large hanging clusters of blue-black fruits ripen in September-October. The elderberry is not demanding regarding its location but flowers most profusely in a sunny spot. There are many culinary uses:
FRUITS: The fruits are used to make jam, fruit juice, jelly, and elderberry gin. The berries are also used for dyeing. It is best not to eat the berries raw as they are slightly toxic. They contain the substance sambunigrin, named after this genus, which is rendered harmless by cooking.
BLOSSOM: The blossoms are used in pancakes, and what about elderflower fritters: for these, they must be dipped in a batter and then fried golden brown in ample fat... Furthermore, syrup can be made from the blossoms; this is mainly produced in England and is known as Elderflower Cordial. In Sweden, the syrup is known as Fläderblomssaft. The dried blossoms can be used year-round to make tea.
