Custard apple 'Prima 1216'

  • Product number: 822886.1
  • Origin: North America, Canada
  • Latin: Asimina triloba

This custard apple forms beautiful, large green, frosted fruits with yellow flesh when ripe (early October). The taste is very good, this variety is very fertile and easily self-pollinating, so different varieties are not strictly necessary. A successful selection by D. Montanari from Faenza - Italy.

Fortunately, this fruit tree from North America and Canada, which is quite hardy here, is becoming increasingly known and popular. The taste of the elongated, yellowish-green fruits is truly exotic, leaning towards banana, mango, and pineapple, and they are packed with vitamins. So healthy that there are serious indications of cancer prevention. Young plants prefer shade and need some extra protection in winter; later, full sun is also fine, and they can handle a harsh winter. Eventually reaching a height of 2-5 m, pruning is recommended to prevent even higher growth! The tree's structure is slightly taller than wide, so in the long run, a tree circle of 3-4 meters is advisable. Maintain a minimum distance of 4 m between two trees. The first fruits can be expected after about 4 years, preceded in spring by strangely scented, white to reddish-brown flowers. They do not appreciate sea wind, but slightly acidic soil (on clay soil, ensure plenty of humus) and a layer of mulch are highly valued by the trees. No diseases have been reported in our climate yet, but there is not much experience.
