The flower buds can be pickled as a delicious condiment, and the flowers themselves are a treat in salads: a little sweet and a little sour! The fresh, pink pods are also very tasty raw, in short, a tree to feast on...
The Judas tree is a bare bloomer, with pink flowers appearing in clusters on the bare branches and trunk (!) in May. A striking appearance in a garden! A somewhat bizarre explanation for the name is the tradition that Judas (the betrayer of Jesus) is said to have hanged himself from this beautiful tree. Anyway: after flowering, the heart-shaped leaves emerge, and the long reddish-brown pods with seeds are formed. The ultimate height of this slow-growing tree is approximately 8-10 m. Due to this modest height, the tree is suitable for smaller (city) gardens.
