‘Tuin smakelijk’ contains original and logical gardening tips, techniques, concrete examples, and experiences. Vera Greutink shows how to easily and naturally grow all kinds of edible plants, applicable on various scales. Whether you're growing a garden in pots, cultivating annual vegetables, or creating a beautiful permanent forest garden.
The book is divided into three parts:
- Gardening in pots,
- Vegetable garden with annuals,
- The edible forest garden.
In the first part, Vegetable Gardening in Pots and Containers, Vera discusses the basics of potting soil, how to make your own best mix, how to care for your pots (large and small) and give them the best chances, and what you can do with a north, east, west, or south-facing balcony or patio. She provides concrete examples of how to successfully grow your own salads, herbs, edible flowers, and small polyculture in a pot or container.
The second part, a permaculture vegetable garden, focuses on well-known annuals – the most familiar and beloved vegetable garden crops. It covers how to consider fixed factors (soil type, shade/sun) when designing your garden, how to avoid digging, etc. Vera also shows how to achieve the largest possible yield and how smart working can save a lot of effort and lead to a plentiful harvest. Attention is also given to crop rotation, polyculture, and seed cultivation. Followed by beautiful and clear examples of how she has set up various gardens, suited to different situations and wishes.
The third part is about the forest garden, essentially a garden with many perennials that yield a harvest year after year. Full of enthusiasm and solid knowledge about the different types and layers in your garden, the content remains practical and suitable for a small garden. Guilds, facade gardens, berry hedges, family gardens, and other garden types and compositions are discussed.
