This is an ideal aid for the germination of "difficult", older, or insufficiently ripened seeds. It also helps with the germination of very nitrophilous species (requiring a lot of nitrogen) such as chickweed.
The concentration to be used is 0.2-0.3% = 2-3 grams per liter of water. Chickweed can safely be immersed in a 5x stronger solution.
The seeds are soaked in this solution (maximum 24 hours) or the sown seed tray is misted with it a few times.
- It promotes germination in very fine seeds, such as petunia, begonias, etc.
- It increases the germination power of many species such as Hemp (Cannabis), Parsley, Peppers, Bell peppers, Tomatoes, Rice, Buchloe, etc.
- It accelerates the breakdown of the hard seed coat, thus faster stratification. For example: Delonyx, Caesalpinia, Musa (banana), Butia, tree seeds, etc.
Potassium nitrate or (potassium) saltpeter has the chemical formula KNO3; it is a white crystalline powder that is readily soluble in water. It melts at 334°C and boils at 400°C; never heat it! Be careful when dissolving, use gloves in a well-ventilated area, and reseal any unused powder tightly, as it attracts moisture.
