Sturdy, long-flowering and fragrant. The 3 elements for a popular surge in the garden world! This allium flowers relatively early (April-June) and forms semi-spherical, but round, sturdy umbels (10 cm in diameter) of white flowers with sometimes a hint of lilac and a green midrib. The spherical centre (ovary) of each individual flower provides the finishing touch. This centre turns dark purple to black as it ripens, hence the name Black Garlic. Despite their height of 80 cm, the sturdy hollow stems do not fall over!
Ornamental onions (or Alliums) are very popular! They flower from May, a time when garden chairs can be brought outside!
