Wild leek

  • Product number: 734265.1
  • Origin: Mediterranean region
  • Latin: Allium ampeloprasum

This species is (probably rightly) called the ancestor of our leek and, in addition to the refined leek flavour, also boasts beautiful blossoms: white with pink florets gathered in compact umbels on 1 m high stems. In spring, the young leaves can be harvested early; later (in summer), the bulbs are fully grown and can be harvested and eaten. Replant the smaller bulbs for next year's harvest! Wild leek is often compared and confused with Elephant Garlic. They are closely related, but the latter is difficult to grow in Northern Europe and healthy seed material is not available anywhere to date.

Nomenclature:
Latin: Allium ampeloprasum
Dutch: Oerprei (Wild Leek)
Also known as: Parellook (Pearl Onion)
English: Wild Leek
