Will you help reduce the Oak Processionary Moth problem?
The nuisance caused by the oak processionary moth is an annual problem. Our bulb growers started researching how to combat the oak processionary moth in 2015 (together with oak processionary moth expert Silvia Hellingman). The secret is: attracting the natural enemies of the oak processionary moth by planting attractive species around oak trees.
For this purpose, the grower has specifically brought a bulb mixture of daffodils, crocuses, grape hyacinths, anemones, botanical tulips, and glory-of-the-snow to the market. By planting these around oak trees, lacewings, parasitic wasps, tachinid flies, and great tits are attracted, after which these enemies can combat the caterpillar.
The flower bulbs in the packages bloom early in the year, so that the natural enemies are also activated early in the season. It is important to combat the caterpillars early in the year, before they develop their irritating hairs (only later in the year).
