This rare species grows in the mountains of Himachal Pradesh (Northern India) and southern Tibet. You can find this unique plant in wet grasslands at an altitude of 2500-4300 meters! The flower spathe emerges from the ground simultaneously with the oval to arrow-shaped, green leaves. The flower spathe is strikingly deep red to chestnut brown on the inside with a blackish-grey spadix. The flower readily forms seeds, allowing the plant to establish itself well in the garden. Of course, the plants are completely winter-hardy and emerge quite late (in May).
