The growth cycle is somewhat similar to that of the Amaryllis (Hippeastrum), but with flowering in summer. The spherical inflorescence consists of many red flowers with long protruding stamens. This shape gives it the resemblance to a powder puff. After flowering, fertilize generously to nourish the leaves until they die off.
