A special member of the Araceae family, this species arrived in Europe as a curiosity as early as 1815. In late May, a 20-30 cm long spathe grows in a vibrant array of yellow and greenish-white with purple spots. The carrion flower emits an unpleasant odor, which always provokes hilarity, with terms like 'Eau de Charogne' or 'Eau de Caca' doing the rounds... The flowers have a mysterious trick to spread the scent effectively: they produce heat, just feel it! After flowering, the beautifully divided leaves grow on brown-speckled stems, which in turn nourish the tuber that forms in the first year, ready for flowering the following year... In summer, the plant can go outdoors, in winter keep it in a cool spot and quite dry until flowering occurs...
