This beautiful Japanese species forms large spathes (just above the ground) and at approximately the same time, the (equally beautiful) leaf unfurls. The spathes have a deep reddish-brown hood on the inside, which is an outgrowth of the flower sheath. The reddish-brown spadix extends into a several-decimeter-long string, perhaps to attract insects. The outside of the flower sheath is striped white and reddish-brown... Plant the tubers in a shady spot in very humus-rich soil; extra winter cover significantly increases the chance of overwintering, otherwise pot them up and keep them frost-free.
