First, from the bare bulb emerges a wondrously beautiful flower with a thick spadix and yellow-green spathe. The spadices are meant to attract flies for pollination and thus have an (to them) attractive carrion scent! After flowering, the beautiful, compound leaf develops on purple-brown spotted, thick stems. The bulb can tolerate some frost; extra soil or leaves provide more protection.
