This impressive species is also simply called Konjac and is very well known in Japan because a flour and a gel called "konnyaku" are made from its tubers. For us, the spectacular flower and the enormous compound leaf are particularly interesting! The flower (which can be up to 60 cm tall itself) rises to a height of 150 cm and the leaf even grows up to 200 cm! The plant only reaches this enormous size if you keep it in a greenhouse in winter; in the open ground, it will still grow to about 100 cm tall.
The spathe is purplish-red in color with an enormous spadix or club. Is it any wonder that the plant is also called the Penis Plant...?
Before frost approaches, remove the tubers from the ground and store them in slightly moist cocopeat, well protected from frost. The tubers must be quite large to flower; we sell younger tubers, which can only flower after several years. These tubers will, of course, produce the ornamental foliage, which, with healthy development, will cause the tuber to grow to flowering size.
