A strong, annual grass species that easily takes hold in fertile soil. The plants grow to about 1m high, have broad leaves and form beautiful flower spikes, which change color from green to copper-brown. The seeds are edible as millet and are easy to harvest. Roasted seeds form a coffee substitute. The young leaves are edible both raw and cooked.
