Chinese hackberry

  • Product number: 651300
  • Origin: East Asia
  • Latin: Celtis sinensis

Lanceolate leaves with graceful branching, as a tree in the garden you do need space. As an avenue tree, it is often planted in drier parts of the country, as the Nettle Tree cannot tolerate wet clay. This tree resembles the Elm and is often used as a replacement (due to Dutch elm disease). As an espalier or even as a bonsai, you can keep the trees much smaller by pruning, resulting in very decorative specimens over the years!

Sowing method: Year-round. Mix the hard seeds with a handful of moist river sand and store at 15-20°C for a period of several months, stirring regularly and keeping moist. This is necessary to soften the hard seed coat and make it permeable to water. Then store at ± 5°C, after which the actual germination can start. If sprouts become visible after a few weeks or months: sow. This germination method is called "stratification".
