Japanese hornbeam

  • Product number: 651270
  • Origin: Japan
  • Latin: Carpinus japonica

The Japanese hornbeam first forms a shrub that slowly develops into a small (10 m) decorative tree with a beautiful vase-shaped growth habit that later broadens. It resembles the common hornbeam. A clear difference is the bark of Carpinus japonica, which is light grayish-brown and peels off in small, thin flakes. The leaves are relatively narrow and long, and deeply veined. When they emerge, they are tinged reddish. The leaf margin is sharply serrated, and the leaf tip tapers to a point. The underside of the leaf is lightly hairy. The nuts are in catkins that are short and stout. Due to the presence of individual bracts, the clusters resemble large hop cones and are very decorative. They grow to about 6 cm long. The crown is very dense, allowing little light to pass through. The autumn color is golden yellow. The root growth is relatively shallow. Decomposed leaves from the Japanese hornbeam are a good soil improver.

Sowing method: Sowing outdoors and letting it experience 1-2 winters is the most natural method. Another way: soak the seeds in water for 24 hours, then sow the seeds in a tray with cocopeat and sand, then place them in a warm place for 2 months (15°-25°C), keeping them normally moist. After that, place them in the refrigerator for 3 months (wrap in foil, moisten occasionally if necessary), after which germination should follow.
