This small African tree was once very important in warfare because different types of poison can be brewed from its pods, beans and bark, for use in poison arrows, among other things. In fishing, this fast-acting poison is still used to stun fish so they can be removed from the water. The plant parts are not toxic without processing, however. After the small, fragrant, white flowers, the plants produce elongated green pods that ripen to a purplish-brown colour. The wood of the small trees is very popular as a durable hardwood. An interesting houseplant for us!
