A very attractive shrub that grows in Southern Africa and can be kept in a pot here. Its pinnate, glossy leaves are adorned with red flowers (erythros = red), which mature into triangular, bladder-shaped fruits (physos = bladder), reddish-brown in color with large, round seeds.
The plants prefer very well-draining soil; a layer of stones or grit at the bottom of the pot is recommended. In Africa, this is a multi-functional shrub; the entire plant is readily eaten by animals, and the pleasantly fragrant fruits are used to make jam or a delicious alcoholic beverage. The edible seeds contain good quality oil, from which soap or lubricants are extracted. The leaves are used medicinally for eye diseases; research this thoroughly before experimenting yourself…
