This is one of the ancestors of the banana we know from the greengrocer. The plants have considerable growth power and the large leaves grow more vertically than most banana varieties. When the plants are old enough, the fantastic red, white, and chestnut-brown inflorescence appears, from which the banana bunches develop.
Due to the large number of seeds in the fruits, these are only used for cooking or baking. In the tropics, the leaves are used as plates or to wrap food, and underground stems are also eaten as vegetables...
The plants can be moved outdoors in summer and from October to April can be kept indoors in a very bright location. You can also give the plant substantial winter protection outdoors; the leaves will then die back and (if the winter is not too severe) the plant will sprout again from the roots.
