The kapok tree is a tropical tree species that makes a nice houseplant in our climate. The species is native to South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and tropical West Africa. In nature, the trees grow over 70 m tall and have a rather thick, bottle-shaped trunk. A tuft of white cotton protrudes from the icicle-shaped fruits: the kapok. These soft fibers, which consist of the hairs on the seeds, are used, among other things, as filling for pillows and vests. Nowadays, synthetic material is increasingly used for this application. This tree is known in Suriname as kankantri(e) and plays a role in many Anansitori, stories about the spider Anansi. (Source: Wikipedia)
