Beautiful tall (2-3 m), well-branched garden plant with yellow flowers that resemble small sunflowers. 20 flowers per (hairy) stem is not uncommon! The elegantly pinnate leaves protect themselves from excessive transpiration by turning away from the sun. In dry areas, this North American plant can root up to 4 m deep and is therefore resilient!
Its use as a remedy for lungs and airways is known; Native Americans also used the plant to kill body worms. The gum-like substance that forms in the upper stem parts was used as chewing gum.
