The plant first develops a dense canopy of nettle-like leaves. Late in summer, thick flower stalks appear, bearing elongated clusters of downward-facing, trumpet-shaped flowers in a navy blue colour with a lilac hue. The thick clusters bloom from bottom to top. After flowering, prickly fruits develop, which give the plant its name. Give the plants a sunny spot, well-drained soil and protect them from severe frost. This relative of Sage and Mint has aromatic leaves but is not used as an herb. Height approximately 90 cm.
