A native species, which therefore easily thrives anywhere, as long as the spot is sunny and moist; it can also be underwater. The long spikes (50-150cm) are adorned with small reddish-purple flowers, beloved by bees, hoverflies, and butterflies. It blooms from June to September and makes a strong cut flower (though the vase often needs refilling). Because the stem and leaves contain tannin, it was formerly used in tanning. The root sap provides a red dye for dyeing wool.
