The elegant, airy, grey-silver to green foliage (depending on the amount of light) has the appearance of a small fern. Surprisingly, delicate stems (25 cm high) emerge from it, bearing ivory-white to lemon-yellow flowers, each with a wine-red labellum. The arrangement of the flowers gives the plant one of its Dutch names, meaning "little birds on a stool"! The species name "ophiocarpa" means "snake fruit" and refers to the fruits that develop after flowering, resembling small snakes. This shade-loving plant naturalizes easily, and its origin (Eastern Himalayas) guarantees good frost resistance.
