This beautiful Japanese species produces large spathes (just above the ground) and at about the same time, the (no less beautiful) foliage unfurls. The spathes have a deep reddish-brown hood on the inside, which is an outgrowth of the spathe. The reddish-brown spadix develops into a string several decimeters long, perhaps to further attract insects. The outside of the spathe is striped white with reddish-brown... Plant the tubers in a shady spot in very humus-rich soil; extra winter cover gives a good chance of overwintering, otherwise pot them up and keep them frost-free.
