This California lupine immediately stands out due to its small, 7-fingered leaves, which are grey-green in colour and have a somewhat thick texture. In fertile soil, the plant blooms all summer with long flower clusters mainly in blue. Within each blue butterfly-shaped flower, white, lilac, and pink colours are often also present. In rich, moist soil, they can grow to 1 m high. After flowering, hairy, decorative pods form.
