An airy, profusely flowering, robust plant 30-80 cm tall (depending on water supply) with light blue trumpet-shaped flowers. Typical are the spherical fruits, from which the plant gets its species name "inflata" (=inflated or swollen). In addition to its ornamental value, the name also reveals its history as tobacco; smoking is said to be a euphoric experience that Native Americans gladly sought (and still seek?). Modern smokers use this tobacco as a quit-smoking aid to get off nicotine, as lobeline is apparently less addictive. Small amounts as tea are beneficial for the nervous system, airways, and throat. Experiments are currently underway with lobeline as a growth inhibitor for cancer cells. Please note: an overdose is dangerous and experiments are at your own risk!
