This woody relative of Basella (climbing spinach) is a real tree or wall killer in the (sub)tropics, much like our Russian vine. The fast-growing, vining plant with succulent leaves and abundant (warty) aerial tubers reaches an enormous weight! For us, the plant is not hardy, so don't worry! Place them in a large pot with support stakes formed into a trellis, and the plant will surprise you with fresh growth and delightfully fragrant, white blooms.
The leaves are the basis for a juicy spinach, the so-called Madeira Spinach, and the tubers must be baked or fried; raw, they have an unpleasant aftertaste. The aerial tubers can, of course, be fried immediately! The tubers can be stored frost-free (mixed with sand or cocopeat) throughout the winter and will diligently sprout again the following year!
