One of the most important tropical tuber crops because the plant can withstand both moisture and drought and provides years of harvest in a small garden. Here, it is an attractive houseplant, which eventually also grows a tuber. In summer, it can be placed outside in the sun...
The plant originally grows in Brazil, where it has been on the human menu for at least 5000 years. After 1600, the plant came to Africa and Asia. Besides the tuber, the young leaves are also eaten as spinach.
The neutral-tasting product made from the Cassava root is called Tapioca. It is rich in starch and is used in cooking, as a thickener in food, and as a binder for medicinal tablets. Tapioca flour is gluten-free and therefore suitable for people with celiac disease. Tapioca is also often used as pig feed in the Netherlands. Finally, the flour is an important ingredient in kroepoek.
