This variety was developed after black potatoes became increasingly popular. As most black varieties are floury (and therefore suitable for chips), the 'Purple Rain' is a great addition because it is quite firm when cooked. This makes it slightly less suitable for baking, but much better for fresh consumption and use in salads. The tubers store well, yield a good harvest, plant them a little deeper than usual as they tend to grow upwards. They can be harvested mid-early. Their disease resistance against Phytophthora is better than most other black spuds!
BLACK OR PURPLE-SKINNED VARIETY FOR GOURMETS.
Black potatoes form an uncommon group in our assortment. The skin is deep purple to almost black, and the flesh is purple, marbled, or white. To preserve the surprising effect of the color, we recommend not peeling the tubers but washing them before cooking. Plant from mid-April, when the soil has sufficient warmth. Pre-sprouting in light or in a large pot can be done earlier. Do not place them in too wet a spot, but ensure they get plenty of sun. The average planting distance is 70x40 cm, we recommend 80x40 cm to prevent diseases.
