(2009) Parents: Mul 91-13 x Bru 93-136, breeder: Jan van Loon. A breakthrough in potato breeding: this variety has a very high resistance to 6 biotypes of potato cyst nematodes. At the time of its introduction until our introduction (2012), there is no other potato variety that possesses all these resistances. The advantage of this characteristic is that the nematodes will decrease after growing this variety, making crop rotation less and less urgent!
Furthermore, Monte Carlo is sufficiently resistant to late blight (Phytophthora) in the tuber, has high resistance to viruses, scab, and blackspot bruising. Due to its average dry matter content (21.5%) and its fairly firm to slightly floury cooking characteristics, it is a versatile potato that is also highly drought-resistant.
MID-EARLY VARIETY.
A mid-early variety means it can be harvested from August. Harvesting a few weeks earlier is possible by planting earlier. The planting time is from mid-April, when the soil is warm enough. Pre-sprouting in light or in a large pot can be done earlier. Do not place them in a too wet spot, but in good sun. Mid-early varieties can suffer from the dreaded potato blight (Phytophthora infestans). Some preventive measures are: planting widely spaced, fertilizing with patentkali, not spraying water over the plant, and possibly organic spraying with sulfur or silinal. The average planting distance is 70x40 cm, we advise maintaining 80x40 cm to prevent diseases.
