Potatoes 'Bintje'

  • Product number: 401600.1
  • Origin: South America
  • Latin: Solanum tuberosum

(1910) Parents: Munstersen x Fransen. The most widely cultivated potato in our country, once bred by K.L. de Vries. Slightly floury when cooked, good taste and colour, very high yield. Suitable for clay and sandy soil. Especially famous for its baking properties: very suitable for chips. Size 28/35 contains ± 100 tubers per 2.5 kg, they produce 7 stems per 2 tubers and can be planted in 20 m².

MEDIUM-EARLY VARIETY.
A medium-early variety means it can be harvested from August. Harvesting a few weeks earlier is possible by planting earlier. Planting time is from mid-April, when the soil has sufficient warmth. Pre-sprouting in light or in a large pot can be done earlier. Do not place them in too wet a spot, but ensure they get plenty of sun. Medium-early varieties can suffer from the dreaded potato blight (Phytophthora infestans). Some preventive measures are: spacious planting, fertilizing with patentkali, do not spray water over the plant and, if necessary, organic spraying with sulfur or silinal. The average planting distance is 70x40 cm; we recommend maintaining 80x40 cm to prevent diseases.

Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries is the breeder of the Bintje potato. He was born on February 25, 1854, in Hardegarijp and died on November 20, 1929. The success he achieved with Bintje has never been equaled, although numerous breeders made and continue to make zealous attempts. (from: http://www.bintje.info/doc/afstudeerproject.doc) From 1890 to 1920, De Vries was the headmaster of the public primary school in Suameer. Photographs show the passionate gaze that characterized him. K.L. was a man who went for it. Perseverance, industriousness, and insight made him successful. He carried out his breeding work on behalf of the Frisian Agricultural Society. De Vries, holding diplomas in agriculture and horticulture, also taught evening courses in agriculture and horticulture. He was a tireless farmer's son. The success of the Frisian breeder did not go unnoticed. He won several awards at exhibitions. Her Majesty the Queen presented him with two silver medals, among other accolades. This recognition came after years of diligent breeding work without acknowledgement. In 1902, De Vries launched three successful varieties: Douwe Jan, De Wet, and Frisius. The first-mentioned variety was named after his son. The Bintje variety – a cross between Munstersen and Fransen – was bred in 1905. Bintje Jansma, the beauty after whom K.L. named the potato, was 17 years old at the time. She was not, as is often claimed, in De Vries's class that year. She died in 1976 in Franeker as Bintje Pebesma. De Vries bred no fewer than 125 usable varieties. And his students were able to witness this. The potato seeds grew in so-called "bokkingkistjes" (small wooden boxes, originally used for herring), which stood on the school's windowsills.
