Potatoes 'Eersteling'

  • Product number: 401100.1
  • Origin: England
  • Latin: Solanum tuberosum

(1891) Parents: syn. Duke of York of Midlothian Early. Parents: Early Primrose x King Kidney. A historic variety from England, bred by William Sim. This is primarily a 'first early' because the particularly good taste is only optimal with very early harvesting. After that, the taste diminishes somewhat. Although (there is no disputing taste, after all) lovers of very floury potatoes will continue to appreciate this variety even with a late harvest. You don't grow them for the yield, which is always lower with early crops. Especially for clay soil. Size 28/40 contains ± 90 tubers per 2.5 kg, they produce 7 stems per 2 tubers and can be planted in 20 m². Tip from a customer (experiential expertise): later-ripened Eerstelingen (i.e., not harvested early) have a remarkably long shelf life!

EARLY VARIETY.
An early variety primarily means that it grows quickly and is therefore ready for early harvest. The planting time is roughly the same as for later varieties (April). However, to get an extra early harvest, these varieties are often planted earlier (mid-March with foil protection or even from January under glass). Early varieties are less prone to the dreaded potato blight (Phytophthora infestans). Although the epidemic occurs earlier and earlier: plant sparsely and fertilize with potash. The average planting distance is 70x40 cm; we recommend maintaining 80x40 cm to prevent diseases.
