The primary benefit of this winter rye is that its active root system reduces the leaching of minerals and humus from the soil. Furthermore, if mown early in spring, the green growth makes excellent fodder for livestock (large and small). Finally, a strong rye crop will grow from it in the summer! If you don't want the latter, the green growth can also be added to the compost heap and the root crown worked into the soil.
To avoid depleting your valuable soil, it's wise to let it lie fallow occasionally. During such a period, green manure is ideal: it adds nutrients to the soil through often present nitrogen fixation; it suppresses weed growth, promotes bacterial life, provides humus, and in some cases, helps control harmful nematodes.
