This very versatile wild African marigold from South America proves that beauty can also be very useful! Especially its feathered leaves are very ornamental; feel free to sow a hedge with them. Planting this 1-2m tall species means the end for many nematodes and also suppresses several troublesome weeds, such as ground elder. Its deep root system improves soil structure. In South America, there is a popular drink made from the dried leaves and flowers: make tea from it, add liqueur, syrup, honey, or sugar: a proven cough remedy! It can also be used as a herb with rice or mashed potatoes and (the list goes on) as a base oil for the perfume and pharmaceutical industries.
