This annual clover has toothed leaves and blooms lilac-pink to rose-red. The flowers are 'mounted' upside down (with the standard pointing downwards). It makes an ideal undergrowth for taller crops such as corn, Sudangrass, quinoa, and grains, but also for fruit trees and bushes. Bees love it! This leguminous plant can bind nitrogen from the air and store it in its roots. When mowed and dug in, this nitrogen becomes available for other plants. All parts of the plant are edible, by the way.
To avoid depleting your valuable soil, it's wise to leave it fallow occasionally. During such periods, green manure is ideal: it adds nutrients to the soil, often through nitrogen fixation; it suppresses weed growth, promotes bacterial life, provides humus, and in some cases, works against harmful nematodes.
