Sweet Clover, White 'Wit'

  • Product number: 391200
  • Origin: Europe
  • Latin: Melilotus albus

White sweet clover is a 0.5-1.5 m tall, annual or biennial plant from the legume family (Leguminosae) and is therefore able to fix nitrogen from the air in its root nodules. This makes the soil more fertile when the plant is mown. The clover leaves are trifoliate, hence clover-three... The white flowers grow in elongated clusters and bloom from July to October. The bare pods that form after fertilization are brownish. Preferably do not sow on acidic soil. The plant contains coumarin, just like common sweet vernal grass or yellow sweet clover (Melilotus officinalis). This substance gives the scent to freshly mown grass. Because of this fresh scent, people used to place dried sweet clover between their clothes. Please note: in moldy hay, coumarin can be converted into toxic coumarol or even dicoumarol; these are blood-thinning substances that can cause, sometimes even fatal, bleeding in animals that eat this hay. Incidentally, it is precisely this substance that, in the correct dosage, can be used for thrombosis. (from: Wikipedia - edited-) Flowering period July-October.

To avoid depleting your valuable soil, it is wise to occasionally leave the land fallow. During such a period, green manure is ideal: it brings nutrients into the soil through often present nitrogen fixation; it suppresses weed growth, promotes bacterial life, provides humus and, in some cases, works against harmful nematodes.
